Artillery:

Field Artillery in the Colonies had a difficult time. The general field piece of the time was a 6 Pound cannon, the 6 pounds refering to the 6 lb cast iron cannon ball that the cannon used. But due to the nature of the ground over which the armies fought, these cannons were difficult to move. And once the actual fighting started, It was almost impossible to reposition the cannons. The artillery was best used for defense.

The maximum range for even the larger cannons of the time was only about 1,200 yards, and it was usually much shorter than that.
